Crimestoppers and TipSoft

The Deming Police Department in collaboration with the Luna County Sheriff's Office, and the local New Mexico State Police embarked on a new project to update the Crimestoppers reporting program.

The previous Crimestoppers Program was established many years ago. The original idea was to provide an anonymous crime reporting system for citizens to be able to report a crime, to provide information about a person or people involved in crimes, or to provide facts about crimes under investigation to local law enforcement personnel all without the fear of their personal identity becoming known.

We learned about a program called TipSoft, which is a private company located in Canada that manages Crimestopper reports by allowing completely anonymous information to be reported to their company, then relays the information to the local law enforcement agencies.
With the TipSoft program, citizens can send a text message, email or even call in a tip to the TipSoft call center where all of the identifying information is completely removed, and retyped before being sent to local law enforcement. This system also allows an officer to follow-up, through TipSoft, with the tipster to ask questions or request additional information. This new feature, not previously available, will greatly asist the local authorities in their investigations.

The Crimestopper Program, using TipSoft, will still work the same - the citizen will be provided a tip number they keep to update information if they learn new or additional facts they feel are important to the case. Tips that lead to an arrest are still eligible fo cash rewards.

Once a tip is recorded it is then sent to law enforcement and assigned to an officer, agent and/or detective. Dialogue between the reporter and the assigned officer can be requested and remains completely confidential. There is absolutely no way law enforcement can identify the reporter.

Another great feature of TipSoft is the smart phone users can download and "app" to their and register a confidential, anonymous account through the TipSoft system. This then allows local law enforcement, through TipSoft, and using reverse information, in the event of a serious incident, weather emergency, or any other major critical incident, to relay information back out to the general public The information being sent to the general public is in real time. Registered account users receive local, accurate information when time and correct information matters.

The reverse notification feature also allows law enforcement to notify the public when law enforcement is seeking information about a crime that occurred and is under investigation. This feature can be beneficial in cases of missing persons and/or abductions, again where time is of the most importance in locating these individuals. Registering is free and easy and only takes about three minutes.

What is Crime Stoppers?

Crime Stoppers is a program which involves the public, the media and law enforcement in the fight against crime.

It offers anonymity and cash rewards to those providing information relating to suspicion or commitment of crimes. Anonymity overcomes fear of involvement and retaliation and cash rewards speak for themselves.

How does Crime Stoppers Work?

If you recognize the person who committed a crime, or knows about the crime, use

TIPSOFT to give a tip. All information is stripped of identity and the tip is given a number. The information is then given
to the law enforcement agency handling the crime. The caller is asked to check back at a later time and
identify themselves with their number ONLY.

Do callers identify themselves?

The caller is NEVER identified, even by gender. All calls are confidential and are never recorded or traced.

If the information provided proves useful to law enforcement, then arrangements are made for the reward to be paid in cash and in a way to preserve anonymity.

Who administers Crime Stoppers?

The Deming/Luna County Board of Directors is comprised of concerned citizens in the area. Each member of the Board is elected by the existing membership, and all members of the Board serve on a voluntary basis, no compensation is paid to any member of the Board. Deming/Luna County Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization under section 501(c)3 of the IRS code and is funded solely by donations. It does not receive any tax dollars.

Does Crime Stoppers work?

YES! Since the start of Crime Stoppers, many calls have been received resulting in hundreds of arrests and recovery of substantial amounts of property. Calls have included information about robbery, rape, assaults, drug and firearms offences.

We all want to live in a community free of crime. You can do something about it and that's where Crime Stoppers can help. The information you have may help solve a crime or prevent one from happening.

The information you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is, might be the missing piece that is important to the investigation.

Crime Stoppers is a community based policing service which allows you to give information anonymously on the phone or by texting.
Remember, if you see or know something, say something.
